When buying a car, whether it is new or used, you are likely to want to protect yourself from the cost of unexpected repairs. Warranties can protect you from what can be a high-cost repair, and extended warranties can add even more protection and keep you on the road.
New Car Warranty
Whenever you buy a new car from a dealership, it will be covered by a warranty to protect you from manufacturer defects. There are different categories for a new car warranty, each covering different aspects of the car across a different time range:
- The comprehensive, or bumper-to-bumper warranty will cover most problems due to manufacturer defects such as audio systems, or the dashboard. Most warranties will last for three years or 60,000 km, whichever comes first.
- The powertrain warranty component will cover the more significant parts of the car such as the engine and transmission. Usually, this warranty is for a longer period of 5 to 10 years, or 100,000 to 160,000 km.
When buying a used car, from a CRS Automotive dealer in Cambridge, for example, particularly one less than three years old and has a low number of kilometers, it will usually still be covered by its new car warranty. In cases where you are wanting more coverage, or the new car warranty is nearing its expiration no longer valid, an extended warranty is an option that many used car dealerships offer.
Extended Warranties
Most extended warranties do exactly what their name suggests, and will cover pretty much everything the new car warranty covers, but will extend the period that your car is covered. Some extended warranties will also include roadside assistance should the car be undrivable, or rental car coverage when the car is under repairs. There may also be protection options for the paint job as well as tires and rims.
An important part of all car warranties is to be aware of what is required of you to keep your car covered. Many warranties will require you to follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule such as regular oil or fluid changes. It’s also important to consider any impact on the warranty before making modifications to the car.
